Thumbnail Sketch of Original French Alpine Importation
reprinted from May 1963 Dairy Goat Journal
In 1922, 18 does and 3 bucks were imported from France and
were taken to California. All of the purebred French Alpines in the United
States can be traced back to these 21 animals, as listed in Vol 16 of the
American Milk Goat Record Assn. Dr. De Langle of California was personally
responsible for this importation, both selecting them and accompanying them
on their long journey. In choosing these animals, however, he had assistance
of the Societie D'Accclimation and its secretary, M. Crepin. Apparently many
of them came form the St. Romain district, located at the base of the Alps
in Savoy Province.Variety of color and pattern in French Alpines gives them
distinction and individuality.
Colors range from white through fawn, buff, brown, red or black with these various colors combining in interesting patterns. There were 3 bucks in the original importation. Henri de Navarre was black and white; Le Poilu was a silvery gray; and Chateubriand was a chamoisee with brown and black striped. Of the 18 does originally imported, 6 were black and white, 4 were white, 4 were brown and white, and 3 were chamoisee. La Midinette is described as black, washed with white and brown. These same varieties in color patterns persists in French Alpines to this day.
